End Date 09/30/2010 Purpose The Building Technologies Research and Integration Center (BTRIC) in the Energy and Transportation Science Division (ETSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking two experienced senior technical project managers to manage growing R&D, deployment and technical assistance projects (many are external to ORNL). BTRIC focuses on four main areas: 1) research and development of new materials, components, and systems technologies for energy efficiency in buildings, 2) whole-building and community integration (energy efficiency, renewable energy, and to grid), 3) improved energy management in existing buildings and industrial facilities during their operational phase, and 4) market transformations from old to new in all these areas. Candidates will have the opportunity to work with experienced staff and utilize BTRIC's wealth of experimental facilities, which have been designated as a Department of Energy (DOE) National User Facilities. This Center is a recognized focal point for addressing technical problems confronting the U.S. buildings industry. One position will report to the manager of the Whole Building and Community Integration Group and one position will report to the manager of the Residential, Commercial, and Industrial Energy Efficiency Group. Major Duties/Responsibilities The successful candidate will: - Work independently and with other researchers on projects related to heating, ventilating, air-conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration equipment, - Lead and manage large technical projects related to building equipment, - Manage subcontracts for technical projects, - Manage R&D, deployment, and technical assistance projects external to ORNL (requires LEED Certification and/or Certified Energy Manager) - Collaborate with research staff and partner with organizations such as appliance and HVAC manufacturers on future research initiatives related to building equipment, - Provide guidance to technical managers on the appropriate application of project management best practices, - Develop collaborative research projects with internal organizations such as the Materials Science and Technology and the Measurement Science and Systems Engineering Divisions and external organizations such as appliance and HVAC manufacturers, utility companies, and DOE working groups, - Interact with existing DOE sponsors and potential new industry partners in pursuit of new and additional research funding, - Interact with senior internal staff and senior external clients, - Prepare new proposals to the DOE, - Present research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and at technical society meeting such as ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers), - Actively participate in building industry organizations and events. Numerical calculation and statistical data analysis techniques are required for preparation of research results. Demonstrated proficiency in building energy simulation, heat and mass transfer, experimental studies, field testing and sustainable program project management experience is desired. LEED certification is desired. Certified Energy Manager status is desired. Experience with performance contracting is a plus. Experience with placing and managing subcontracts is a plus.
